Perfect Imperfects – Jasper Pedyo

TUESDAY 18TH MAY – SATURDAY 17TH JULY 2021

Our Gallery will be opening on 18 May with Perfect Imperfects, a solo exhibition by Jasper Pedyo.

Jasper has already won the prestigious 2018 Free Range exhibition prize in London, for his striking mixed media paintings which feature a bold use of binary colours on stretched and shaped canvases.

Jasper has visited the gallery from a very young age and it’s great to see how his practice has developed over those years.

Jasper on how contemporary culture influences his work:

I paint contemporary culture without necessarily having to obviously state what it is. I take what I think is aesthetically pleasing about an object and intensify it by simplifying it and reducing it to its bare elements. You might not necessarily recognise what my paintings were inspired by, but that’s not the point.”

Although visiting the exhibition is free, advanced booking is required at this time.

Fat Life Drawing X The Civic

THURSDAY 3RD JUNE

We are going to be running a series of collaborative classes with the wonderful Fat Life Drawing throughout the No Boundaries season.

Fat Life Drawing is made up of Emily and Isobel; two sisters living in London and Harrogate who put together FLD after finding that most life drawing sessions lacked diversity and inclusivity.

Their goal has been to create a comfortable and safe, judgement-free space for like-minded creatives to come together.

They have been running virtual classes since June 2020 and have raised over £21,000 for various charities and fundraisers.

The sessions are conducted over Zoom, with a link being sent out to participants a short time beforehand.

We hope you can join us!

No Boundaries – Zine Launch

JUNE | JULY 2021

To celebrate all that No Boundaries is and in keeping with our annual tradition, throughout the first half of this year we have been creating a Zine which binds together interviews, features and creative writing from some of the artists that make up this programme of work.

This has been kindly supported by ASOS.

The zine includes a feature on the wonderful Fat Life Drawing, our integrated theatre company Cross The Sky as well as an inside look at Body Beautiful: Diversity on the Catwalk our headline exhibition for this programme.

We are officially launching a limited edition run of these zines alongside the launch of The Way Ahead public artwork.

We also wrote a blog delving into the history of zines which you can read here.

Caroline Cardus – The Way Ahead Exhibition

SATURDAY 26TH JUNE 2021 – SATURDAY 7TH AUGUST 2021

The Way Ahead was created by artist Caroline Cardus to reflect the issues disabled people wish the government and society was addressing more thoroughly in an accessible, subversive and humorous way.  It was originally intended to be a 6-month community art project but 17 years later it is still in demand as a disability art protest piece which clearly demonstrates there is much more to be done, and much more to say.

The rules of the road are a wonderful visual system. Information is easily communicated through the arrangement of simple shapes and symbols. When it comes to travel, we have found a system most people can understand easily. The Way Ahead was inspired by a wish that such a system could exist for disability awareness.

As the artist behind the piece Caroline Cardus explains:

Through personal experience, I knew a lot of it could be simple common sense, yet met many people who were intimidated by disability awareness or access requirements. So, I decided to put the two subjects together, and subvert the formula (a method beloved of activists and artists), to see whether it could work in another context.”

This exhibition has been co-commissioned with Shape Arts
